BRUSHTAIL POSSUM

Brushtail possums range from approximate 32-58cm in size. They have thick silver grey fur above and thick cream to pale grey fur below.
As the name suggests, they have a black bushy tail. They have large pointed ears and a pink nose.

Possums eat flowers, leaves, shoots, fruits, and seeds. They may also consume animal matter such as insects, birds eggs and chicks, and other small vertebrates.
-
You'll typically hear possums in roof voids, wall cavities, lofts and chimney spaces.
They typically prefer dark sheltered and tight spots to sleep, mimicking a tree hollow.
If possums reside in your roof, you’ll hear them make a noisy exit about 9-11pm so they can go and forage for food, and then you’ll hear them return about 5-7am for their evening sleep.
Brushtail possums only need a hole the size of a tennis ball to get into your roof space, Ringtail possums need less.
So batten up those hatches ‘me hearty!
-
Possums typically strips the tops of trees of new shoots. They love to eat from your fruit trees. You'll also hear them making a big raucous in your roof if they’ve taken up residence.
-
Possums typically live about 4-5 months in the pouch after birth. From about 8-10 months they'll start foraging for solids with Mum. At about 10 - 12 months old they'll be independent enough to go out on their own, and typically live a long healthy life of 12 or so years.
Breeding peaks around September to November, but they can typically only rear one young at a time.
